He published his illustrations in 'Life' magazine and other major national publications for more than 30 years, becoming editor of 'Life' in 1918 and later owner of the general interest magazine.
Best known for his creation of the Gibson Girl, an iconic representation of the beautiful and independent American woman at the turn of the 20th century. |

Canadian born illustrator and author, best known for ‘The Brownies’, his series of humorous verse books and comic strips about the mischievous but kindhearted fairy-like sprites.
The Brownie characters gained great popularity and were used by George Eastman to promote the widespread use of Kodak's 'Brownie' cameras. The Brownies were merchandised as games, cards, dolls etc., but Palmer Cox never received any money for the use of his comic creations.
Some of his books are more text than art but given their importance we feel they still fit as part of the DCM collection. |

An American artist and writer.
Newell built a reputation in the 1880s and 1890s for his humorous drawings and poems, which appeared in Harper's Weekly, Harper's Bazaar, Scribner's Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Judge, and other publications.
Newell often illustrated the works of other authors, such as Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, John Kendrick Bangs, and Lewis Carroll.

British illustrator, designer, painter, writer, and administrator. His career was very varied, but he is best remembered today as an illustrator of children's books, a field in which he was prolific throughout his life.
His work for adults included designing wallpaper, and he was a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts Movement that tried to rehabilitate good design and craftsmanship. He was greatly interested in art education, serving on various examination boards; in the 1890s he taught in Manchester and Reading, and in 1898–9 he was principal of the Royal College of Art.
