Treasure Chest was a long-lived experiment in educational comics mounted by the Catholic Guild starting in the mid-1940s and continuing into the early 70s. Packed with stories including historical adventure, literary adaptations, illustrated science facts, sports, lessons in citizenship, and some mild religious allusions, Treasure Chest gamely tried to beat the “bad comics” at their own game and use the medium to instill good values and taste. High standards of art and graphic storytelling and distribution through schools and churches ensured there would be plenty of takers.
