Hi...the jpegs originally were well over 2800p. wide. Now they are around 1100p. Why reduce the size so much? Would'nt it be better to leave them at least 1280p? No harm to anyone intended. |

That is just my dictatorial stance of presenting old books, papoopsy. To my experience these shabby, miserably printed books don't look any better if you add 500 pixels of width. I want to read them, not print them. But you could bargain me to widen the range to 1200... :- ) |

Well, you scan them at 400 DPI and then shrink them down to around 150, or even less DPI. Why? Displays are getting bigger and bigger, my cellphone already does 1920 x 1080 pixels (it has close to 400DPI) so even on that 5,3" display it would have to upscale your 1600 x 1100 images. Now imagine that I have to zoom in in order to read since 5,3" is actually quite small. What do you think that looks like? Even on my 10" 1280 x 800 tablet I zoom in on panels (bad eyes). I'm thankful for every extra pixel. |

Sorry, that's the IT guy side of me talking! :) Of course I am always thinking about what will happen to my own scans in a couple of years. Looking at old holiday pics on my homepage it makes me a little sad how small they are on my 27" high definition screen. So even my 1920 scans will probably look like crap in a couple of years. Since this is about preservation, and I doubt that you would like to redo your work anytime soon, it only makes sense to "look over the edge of the plate" (as we say in Germany :P ) from time to time. |

I always look over the edge of the plate - in case some peas have fallen off! Don't worry - I scanned as tiff files so reasonably future proofed - until scanners themselves get better. |

With displays getting better and better and storage getting cheaper and cheaper, it doesn't hurt to up the resolution above what seemed more than adequate just a couple of years ago. With a lot of comics, the one-time scan may be the only one that'll ever be done, so I support higher rez.
That said, this issue's stories are real Wertham bait. Thanks for the comic. |
