Famous Funnies 004 (no BR) coverless copy scanned and edited by KaineZ cover wrap scanned by soothsayr-novus, edited by movielover-novus --- Famous Funnies #1 is the book that started it all for the American comic book collecting aficionado and here is issue #4!
Comparing notes with Overstreet it appears that many of the strips from the first issue are found here in issue #4, but a lot of these didn't have the longevity in Famous Funnies as later strips like Oaky Doakes, Scorchy Smith and Dickie Dare which is a little surprising because Joe Palooka especially was a long running strip. According to wikipedia it was one of the top 5 strips in America in 1948. I know that Oaky Doaks, while popular, achieved no where near the same fame yet it rare for many years in Famous Funnies.
The only way I could afford this issue was because it was coverless! Front and back cover in the archive are from Heritage.
The following strips are in this issue:
Joe Palooka Hairbreadth Harry Connie Lolly Geography / Highlights of History Magic Made Easy Buck Rogers (removed) Somebody's Stenog Strange as it Seems Napoleon (was that dog popular or what???) Dip and Duck Ben Webster's Page Dixie Dugan Slim and Tubby Nipper S'matter Pop? The Nebbs The Bungle Family Vignettes of Life Honeybunch's Hubby Jane Arden Buttons and Fatty Simp O'Dill Ned Brant at Carter Keeping Up with the Joneses |
